Papatahi Suffolks are well suited to the requirements of today's meat industry and the demands of our farming environment. The district is a difficult area for sheep farming with a warm and wet climate. So sires born and bred in the same environment certainly help toward adapting future generations to the local climate, including facial eczema.
Our stud is run under commercial conditions and the sheep are asked to perform at stocking rates of 16 SU/ha. Performance recording is a key component in Papatahi’s initiative to improve the genetic merit of the stud. But the basics cannot be ignored either. Emphasis is placed on the fertility performance of the ewe flock. s. Survivability of lambs is very important. The Suffolk is a popular choice in our area. Farmers prefer Suffolks as a terminal sire where the crossbred lambs are easily identified and can be drafted early. Suffolk cross lambs also have a reputation of doing well when conditions are dry. Important in the farming environment of today. We have been getting very good feedback from our ram clients, which is positive in terms of what we are breeding. Farmers are getting more and heavier lambs drafted at an early age. These lambs command the early season premiums, with more feed left for remaining lambs. A real bonus for the Suffolk breed is their hard dark feet. We have stayed away from the bigger-styled American Suffolk Sheep, breeding instead a conventional meaty type with good length. Strong ram constitution, fertility and longevity are attractive attributes for ram buyers. Rams are lasting longer for farmers than some other terminal breeds.
